Is it My Turn Yet?


I took this picture when I was across from playing with Sassy, who you'll read about below, and this one kept watching us as if to say, "Is it my turn yet"? I was down to my last picture, so this is the best I got of him. I'm planning on going back on Sunday morning sometime, so check back for updates and more pictures. I would also like to say that if you've never been to your local animal shelter, I encourage you to visit there and maybe considering volunteering some of your time. They are always looking for good people just to come in for even 2-4 hours a month, and spend time with the animals. They don't ask for much and the experience you get and the way these animals will make you feel, makes it well worth the time spent. Even if you can just go for an hour or so once a week, that is another hour spent playing with and loving these animals and showing them that there are people out there who care.

Snowy


Meet Snowy! Another awesome cat who is fairly new at the shelter, but I don't think it will take long for her to find a new home. This is one sweet cat! I had to take her pic thru the cage because whenever I opened the door, she wanted to jump up in my arms. This will definitely be a "lap" cat! Some cats let you know when they want to be held, some cats don't like to be held much, and others just want to snuggle and this is definitely a snuggler. She went right up on my shoulder and kept constantly nuzzling up against the side of my face. She just wanted some loving for sure. The cat rooms were full so I just walked around with her holding her in my arms and she just layed there taking it all in. There are several playrooms for the cats and one room has a makeshift tree in it for the cats to climb and crawl in through holes in the bottom. I didn't get to take her in there, but she was content just to watch two other smaller kittens in there playing.

Smudge


I've been working mostly with the dogs, but yesterday I finally spent some more time with the cats and got acouple of pictures of just two of the many cats there. As you can imagine, the cats definitely outnumber the dogs at the shelters. This one, who's name is Smudge, and you can see how she got that name. She is very playful and full of energy. She didn't really want to be picked up yet, so I mostly just played with her thru the cage she was in. What a beauty!

Sassy


Now it's time to meet Sassy and she is one gorgeous looking dog! I got to spend quite a bit of time with her and she has such a good dispositon, that I know she will make a great pet for someone who is out there looking for that one special friend. Alittle on the shy side, I had been told that she didn't really seem to want to socialize much with others, so I decided to take her under my wing for awhile. I am going to try and go back to the shelter tomorrow and spend more time with her if she is still there. She seemed weary of going outside at first, so we took it easy the first time. I went out back with her and just sat down in the yard not too far from the door and she just sat right up next to me and kept trying to duck her head up under my arm. I petted her and hugged and kissed on her and finally her tail started wagging some. With some of the dogs and older pups, you have to get them to see that they can trust you and that you genuinely care about them and then they tend to loosen up a bit. This is one awesome dog and I really wanted to take her home with me so I could work more with her, but those duties will come later down the line as I haven't been at the shelter very long. This is one beauty I will for sure miss when she is gone. She will find a good loving home in no time, I am sure of that.

Wiley


And meet Wiley! She is at the shelter with her son, Riley, who you'll find below. This one is a sweetie for sure! She's a Husky Mix and she had to be shaved but her fur will grow back in no time. The vet fixed her all up and she is healed and ready to go to a new home. This was one awesome dog and loved being outside and actually seemed very comfortable being on a leash. This dog has been well taken care of so I'm not exactly sure how she and her son wound up at the shelter. It would be so awesome if they could both go to the same home instead of being seperated!

Cami


This is Cami and she has long since been adopted, but I wanted to show her to you guys. She was a mix of something, not really sure and I don't remember, but I do know it did not take her long at all to get a new home...Everyone fell for this gorgeous looking dog.

Another Cutie


Another little cutie....this one is alittle older pup, just under 5 months. I took her into the play room for afew minutes and he had a blast in there. Mostly he just wanted to jump up in my lap and give me kisses. A very affectionate pup for sure!

Little Pups


There are quite afew puppies right now available for adoption and they are just adorable...This one is a mix with some Daschound in him. He was shaking when I went in so I took him out to try and calm him down and it actually worked. He just seemed really scared. He was just under 6 wks old and probably wondering where his Mom was, but he was such a cutie and just snuggled up into my jacket. I held him for afew minutes and then when I went to put him back in his cage, he started whimpering, so I know he just wanted to be able to feel safe and secure. I'm sure it won't take long for him to find a good home either.

Meet Riley!


Okay, meet another cutie and he is a sweetheart! He loved going outside for a walk and even posed for this shot...it's almost like he knew what a camera was! This dog will make a great pet for somebody and I know it won't take long for him to find a home.

Good Luck to Cube!


I know I already posted this once, but she is such a beauty, I wanted you to see her again. Yesterday I went back to the shelter and after I signed in, I went straight to where Cube was last week. I saw an empty enclosure and my heart instantly sank. I walked around and saw alot of new faces, but she was no where to be found. Part of me was sad because I really wanted to see her, but then I realized that the fact that she wasn't there, only meant that she had found a home. I was glad of that and only hope she is happy and whoever got her takes really good care of her, because in the short time I knew her, she is an extroidanary dog.

GeeGee


This is Baby GeeGee. I can't leave her out for sure. She too is no longer at the shelter and found a new home to go to, but I wanted to share her pic. I'll be updating my blog with new pictures and stories soon after each visit to the shelter that I'm volunteering at. I try to go at least twice a week, but due to the distance involved in traveling, I'm not able to go as often as I'd like. It's about a 30 min drive from where I'm currently living , so I'm not able to go out there everyday like I'd like to be able to. So keep me bookmarked, and check back often for updates!

Peedy


Well I couldn't have a blog without including one of my old friends, Peedy. He's been at the shelter alittle longer than the other ones, but I'm sure he'll find a home soon. Just over a year old, this dog seems to enjoy bird watching and squirrel chasing, with me at the other end of the leash of course. I actually almost ended up a tree one day with this one. He also seemed to think it was important to stop and check out every tree out back too!

Paully


This is one huge dog! This was the first dog I got to take out to play on my first day of volunteering. Paully was the most energetic and strongest dog there at the time and he ended up taking me for a walk (run) out back. He's no longer at the shelter and found a new and loving family to take him home.

My Animal Friends


Hi there! Just wanted to start a new blog on my adventures as a Volunteer at the local Humane Shelter here in Tennessee. I will be adding more pics and stories every week after my visits. I'm currently volunteering two to three days a week, several hours at a time and eventually hope to be in this line of work full time. It is my passion and my dream to live and work around animals. This is a dream I've had ever since my childhood and I have been around animals all my life. You can visit their website at nashvilleHumane.org I am also a Wild animal lover and an active member in the Tigerhomes.org website which has live animal webcams of Tigers, lions, lemurs and more. Go for a visit, you will be glad you did. They also have a gift shop and many, many educational pages and they are operated solely on donations from people like you and me. This is a very authentic and genuine website and you can even tell them Kitty sent ya!

This is a pic of one of the Two White tigers living at the Sanctuary. This is a pic when Loki was just a cub, but he is much larger now! Go check him out!

Daisy


Here's a pic of Daisy with her roomie in their enclosure. Daisy just sat back and let the other puppy have her chow time in peace. Daisy was a full blooded Siberian Husky and was not at the shelter long. Puppies and grown dogs alike of this breed and several others never stay at the shelter very long before finding a brand new home to go to.

Ms Daisy


Meet Daisy! She's a Siberian Husky Pup about 5 mos old and she is absolutely gorgeous! I have a thing for Husky's and Malamutes, so I fell right for this one the minute I saw her. She was only at the shelter afew days and actually found a new home the day I was there playing with her. Hated to see her go, but she is so blessed to have gotten a new home. I played with her for about half an hour and she was adorable. Full of enery and a camera hog for sure, she actually posed for me on this one!

Cube


This is my girl, Cube. I'm not sure why they named her this, but she is an absolute angel! She's a full blooded German Shephard and just over a year old. I wanted so bad to take her home with me and I think she knew it. From the minute I walked up to her enclosure, I felt an instant bond with this one. I took her out back and we had a long walk and she was very good at listening to me that day and she actually acted like she understood what I was saying. At one point I sat on one of the benches up out on the hill and can you believe she actually tried to sit up in my lap?! Yes, this huge pup! The whole time she kept her two front legs draped over my knees and just sat there and we talked and she just looked around and I fell in love with this beauty. I spent as much time with her as I could, because I knew there was a chance that when I went back she would be gone and will have found a new home!

Just Gimme Something To Chew On....Please!!


One of the puppies I played with this day, just wanted to play. He just wanted to chew on something.....and then chew some more.....and he kept on chewing...Well common sense tells a person not to wear your best clothes when going to the animal shelter because you never know what you might get into (or step into!). So I let the little sweetie tug on my jacket all he wanted. We're not allowed to take the pups under 5 mos old outside, but we do have a play area where we can take them one at a time and let them run around and play all they want. This is done at least two times a day, but with the little pups like this one, they plenty of play time!
