My Animal Friends: February 2006

Cinder

This is Cinder and she is one of the several cats at the shelter awaiting adoption. For the first time in several months, there were afew empty cages at the No-Kill shelter and that is a good thing. That simply means that the ones that were there have been adopted out to good homes, hopefully, and are with new families. I usually spend most of my time at the shelter, walking and socializing with the dogs, but I do go in and visit the Cats whenever I'm there.

SmokeyBear

Well I'm trying this again, I had a post all about SmokeyBear here and then lost it, so I'll just give you a short version of what I had before....This is SmokeyBear and he is one of the many dogs available at the shelter that is up for adoption. You can tell by looking at him where he got his name from, although for me, he looks more like a black Wolf. He is just one of the few dogs I got to spend time with earlier this week. I work tomorrow but I hope to return to the shelter again on my next days off, either Monday or Tuesday of the coming week.

Precious Hank

Another close up of my friend, Hank. You'll read about him below. Whoever adopts this dog, will truly be blessed because this is one awesome dog and will make someone one great companion.

Hank

Okay, some of you may have read alittle about this one in my post on the Tigerhomes sanctuary forum. You finally get to meet Hank. By looking at this dog you would think there is nothing special about this dog....he looks like an ordinary mixed breed. Let me tell you about Hank, he is one friendly, affectionate and unusual dog. Just under 2 years old, this dog has a thing about concrete floors. He just doesn't like them for some reason. As you can see in the pic he has what appears to be a blue blanket laying in his temporary housing at the shelter. Well when I went out there the other day something just made me stop and visit with Hank. He appeared to be alittle frightened and kind of backed away from me. Well that just made me want to visit with him more so I went in the door and he came right up to me and he tail started wagging like crazy. This dog must just not have gotten the attention he so deserves. He just wanted someone to spend time with him and I was going to make sure that person was me. Most volunteers at the shelter look for the cutest dogs or whatever to spend time with and must've just passed Hank by cause by looking at him you would not really see anything special about him. But I saw this dog in a different light. I immediately sat on the floor with him and he was all over me...giving me doggy kissies and just being very affectionate. Well that is not even the beginning....I wanted him to go outside with me, so i hooked him up on the leash and checked it like we are supposed to do to make sure they are not too tight and not too loose so they won't get away should they see another dog outside or squirrels they want to go after. Well I opened the door and started walking but Hank just stood there....He seemed like he was scared and didnt' want to go. I kept calling him and squatting down so i would be on his level and his tail kept wagging but he would not move. This I could tell was not going to be easy but I was prepared to spend all day with him if I had too. One of the shelter workers came and stopped by and advised me that Hank doesn't like the floor and if I want him to go outside that he has to be picked up and carried outside. Now this dog weighs maybe 40 lbs, so that wasn't bad at all so after the worker and I talked for afew minutes I picked Hank up and took him to the door where there was rug at the exit and sat him down. I opened the door to go out and he immediately perked up and was totally fine! We spent afew minutes outside and we had a time....I sat on the ground after we walked around for afew minutes and he would just sit or lay by me as close as he could. Talk about making your heart melt. I wanted to take this one home. After our play time was up we went back to the door and you guessed it...I had to pick him back up to get him inside....he wouldn't go any farther than the little red rug. Once inside his pen, I pushed his food bowl over to him and he immediately began to eat. He slowly went to get water but had to step off the rug in order to do this so he was really paranoid about doing this. So I fixed his rug where he could reach the food and the water and then sat back down and he came over and laid his head in my lap. People, these little things like this are what make what I do all worth it. I would not trade it for anything.

Ewok

I made it out to the animal shelter this week and got to finally spend about 2 hrs out there again. I love doing this and the animals I think know that they are helping me out more than I am helping them. I got to spend quality time with a Chow whose name is Ewok. He is just alittle over a year old and is the most friendly Chow I've ever been around. This dog was awesome and I know it won't take long at all for him to find a really nice home. I truly hope whoever adopts him gives him all the love and attention he deserves cause this is one awesome dog!

Spice

Here is Spice....She is 5 yrs old and is a chow/retriever mix. One beautiful dog, she would make an awesome pet for older kids. She needs a big yard with lots of room to run and play. I'm so sure she won't be at the shelter long. There are so many people that come to the shelter looking for that one cute and cuddly puppy, but they don't realize that the little pups do grow up and most of them do get bigger. You should never get a dog just for looks alone, if that is the case, you really don't need an animal. An animal is and can be a companion for life and they will be your best friend and all they ask for in return in just some love and attention.

SmokeyBear

Another awesome looking dog, Meet SmokeyBear. He is 4 yrs old and is a chow mix. I love the eyes on this animal and he looks so much like my fave animal, the wolf. Let's face it, I would bring them all home if I could. My life long dream is to have a shelter of my own one day. As long as I am breathing, this will always be a dream of mine, and who knows, maybe one day it could happen. Most people just have dreams and never try to make them a reality, but this is one dream that I would love to be able to make a reality. A friend of mine once said, you can't wait for your dream to happen, you have to go out and make it happen. So if it is truly something you want to do, and it was meant to be, if you try to make it happen, it will be a reality.

Shelton

This is one awesome dog and I would bring him home if I could. Gorgeous, he is! He is a husky mix and is about 1-2 yrs old. I love this dog....He reminds me of one of fave white tigers at the tigerhomes sanctuary, named Loki. Notice the eyes and you will see what I mean if you are a regular cam watcher at the www.tigerhomes.org website.....

Macy

Meet Macy...She is one cute dog for sure....she is about 4 yrs old and is a schnauzer mix. Full of energy, this one needs room to roam and a yard to run around in.

Meet Codie

Meet Codie! She is about 2-3 yrs old and is a shepherd/chow mix. She is one awesome dog and would make a great addition to someone's home. I don't think she will be staying at the shelter too long, that's for sure.

Buddy

I haven't been able to go out to the shelter in acouple of weeks but was planning on going Saturday, but may not be able to due to possibly getting 1-3 inches of snow and Ice and the shelter is about 30 min's away. I was really looking forward to going though, because I love doing this more than anything. I love being able to go out there and forget about everything else, even if it's just for alittle while and spend time with four-legged animals that I truly love and care about. I was able to get some pics of some of the animals currently out there and this is Buddy. He is full of energy and about 7 mos old. He is a setter/dalmation mix.

Mink

And this is Mink! A gorgeous Siamese Cat about 2-3 yrs old. This cutey will find a home in no time, I am sure of that!

Deva

Meet Diva and she is a beauty! One gorgeous dog and I'm sure she won't stay at the shelter long. This dog has one awesome personality and would make a great addition to the family. Great with a family with older kids and this dog has lots of energy and needs lots of room to roam and play!

Mr. Bigglesworth

An extroidanary name for one awesome cat! Meet Mr. Bigglesworth. Not sure how he got this name, but he is absolutely gorgeous. Cats always seem to outnumber the dogs and puppies at the shelter, and it seems there are new ones brought in everyday.
